In 1899, Bournemouth was experiencing the most rapid growth in its history. The arrival of the railway had sparked a population explosion, transforming the town from a village of 695 souls in 1851 into a thriving coastal town of tens of thousands. It was in this era of change and community that George Scott founded his funeral service — a business built on trust, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to the families of this town.
For more than 125 years, through two World Wars, sweeping social change, and generation after generation of Bournemouth families, the name George Scott has remained a constant — a steadying presence at life's most difficult moments. Today, as it has always been, we are here to help you through.
George Scott established his funeral service at the height of Bournemouth's Victorian boom. From the very first day, the business was guided by one principle: to serve every family with kindness, warmth, and absolute professionalism — making an impossibly difficult time just a little easier to bear.
George Scott was honoured with the contract to conduct the funerals of members of the armed forces — a deeply meaningful trust that reflected the esteem and respect the business had already built within the community. This honour would be repeated in 1939–1945.
George's son Harold joined the business, bringing with him his wife Lettice after their marriage. Together they upheld the standards George had established, ensuring the family's reputation for compassionate, dignified service continued to grow across Bournemouth.
Harold and Lettice were succeeded by their son Hugh and his wife Judith. Under their leadership the business grew significantly. A landmark moment came in 1986 with the opening of a second funeral home in Kinson, extending the family's care to the northern parts of Bournemouth, Poole, Ferndown, and Wimborne.
Neil, Hugh and Judith's second son, became the fourth generation of the Scott family to carry the tradition forward. His arrival brought renewed energy and vision, leading to major expansion in 1999 — the centenary year — when all company premises were renovated and two brand-new, state-of-the-art chapels were built.
More than 125 years on, the values that George Scott instilled in 1899 remain at the heart of everything we do. Neil is now joined by his sons, Eden and Fenton — the fifth generation of the Scott family to serve Bournemouth. We are proud to be fully independent — never a franchise, never a corporation — so that every decision we make is guided by what is right for the families we serve, not a boardroom far away.
