Choosing the Memorial

We can provide a memorial or cremation tablet for local cemeteries and churchyards, and we would be happy to advise you on local restrictions and regulations. We can also prepare an estimate for one that you may have seen at the cemetery or from one of our brochures.

Our qualified and experienced staff will give sympathetic and professional attention, to guide bereaved families through the many choices available. Neil Scott, great-grandson of the founder George Scott, continues the family tradition of service.

Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss any aspect of the memorial — there is no obligation whatsoever.

Timing Guidance

We advise allowing six months to elapse from the date of the funeral before the memorial is placed, allowing the ground to settle.

From the date of order, please allow approximately three months for the memorial to be completed and installed.

If required in the meantime, we would be very happy to supply a temporary grave marker vase at no extra charge.

What You Will Need to Consider

Every memorial is unique. When planning yours, there are several decisions to work through — and we are here to help with every one of them.

Shape & Style From traditional headstones and flat tablets to modern designs — we can advise on what works best for a given plot and churchyard.

Colour & Type of Stone From classic grey granite to warm sandstone, the stone will define the memorial's lasting character and should suit the surrounding setting.

Colour & Type of Lettering Gold, silver, black or natural — the choice of lettering colour and finish can be deeply meaningful and gives the memorial its distinctive look.

Wording & Inscription The words chosen are a deeply personal reflection of a loved one's life. We can suggest wording or help you craft something entirely your own.

Further Inscriptions Will the memorial need to accommodate future inscriptions for other family members? We can plan for this from the outset to ensure the design works long-term.

Design or Stencil Many families choose to include a motif, emblem, religious symbol, or bespoke decorative design. We can source or create whatever is needed.

Flower Vase If a flower vase is required — and if so, how many? This practical detail ensures the grave can be easily and beautifully maintained for years to come.

Understanding the Costs

Each cemetery and churchyard has different scales of charges for permission to place a memorial. We will advise you on all applicable fees. The typical cost components are:

Cost of the memorial itself
Cost of the lettering — charged per letter
Cost of any ornament, photo, stencil, plaque or vases (if required)
Cost to supply the foundation and fix the memorial in place
Cemetery or churchyard permit fee (varies by location)
No VAT charged. George Scott Funeral Services does not charge VAT on any of the above memorial costs. We will always provide a full, clear estimate before any work is commissioned — with absolutely no obligation to proceed.
